Portugal

Portugal is traditionally a Roman Catholic country, yet 92% of its citizens admit they do not practice their faith.  Instead, the culture is becoming more and more secular and pluralistic.  These two factors lead to a high level of resistance to the Gospel, causing Protestant and Evangelical churches to be viewed with suspicion.  To some extent, large percentages of people are also involved in the occult, placing them in direct opposition to Christ.  Overall, just over 2% of Portugal’s population is involved in an Evangelical, or Protestant church.

Dan and Robin’s ministry vision is to help those who are far from God to come close to Him through Jesus so they can live a flourishing life through the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:13, John 10:10, Ephesians 3:16-19).

This vision guides them to engage in Church planting, Evangelism, and Revitalization (they are actively planting a church in a bedroom community outside Lisbon called São Marcos and are working with several struggling churches in the small town of Beja to unite in their evangelistic efforts).

This vision guides them to focus on Discipleship and Leadership Development (one-on-one and small group discipleship through the local church and a local bible college) and moves them to walk with those who are in distress (helping those in spiritual distress through spiritual accompaniment/direction and helping the homeless).

Mozambique:

While their full-time ministry is in Portugal, the Been’s maintain close connections with two groups in Mozambique, where they once served for 9 years before moving to Portugal.  Mozambique is a Portuguese-speaking  East African country whose main religions are Islam and animistic ancestral worship.

Over 30 years ago, the Christian Churches in Central Brazil sent missionaries to northern Mozambique’s state of Nampula and today that ministry is strong and growing.  Wanting to take the work a step further, Missionary Kleber feels called to train his pastors to become cross-cultural missionaries among the various different tribes within their own region.

To that end, Kleber invited Dan to return to Mozambique two or three times a year for short-term teaching seminars that will give these pastors tangible tools for ministering to the nearby tribes who have very different cultures and practices than their own.

Mozambique is also known for its natural disasters.  When needed, Dan and Robin help those who are in distress due to such catastrophes.  Recently, from December 2024 to March of 2025, three cyclones (known in the west as hurricanes) ravaged  several parts of Northern Mozambique causing devastating destruction for many of its people.

God allowed them to help raise funds and work with local ministers and missionaries to help bring food relief and needed repairs for homes, churches and schools.  This outreach is ongoing and determined by need and God’s calling.
